Here are some common questions and concerns that patients have.
Question : How much time do we need to take off after LASIK before we get back into our normal daily rountine?
The average patients feels back to normal the first day post LASIK and can go back to work as usual.
Question : What are the complications of LASIK?
1. Infection
| Method of vision correction |
Chance of infection |
The chance of infection from LASIK is very minimal and less than the rate of infection from wearing contact lenses . Here at Laser Vision, there has never been any report of infection from using LASIK.
2. Under-correction or over correction
There is little or no chance of this occurring, but the enhancement process could be done after a discussion between the patient and the refractive surgery specialist. If enhancement can not be done, the patients can use glasses or contact lens later on.
3. Glare or halo
The chance of glare depends on the range of refraction.
Range of myopia, Myopia with astigmatism |
% of night glare or halo |

Range of Hyperopia, Hyperopia with astigmatism |

Glare is the situation in which the light scatters from the light source in the dark environment such as the incoming headlight from the car at nighttime. This complication normally has occurred already with those who use contact lens. After LASIK operation, the research found that complication of glare may get better or worse. Those that have the operation only in one eye found to have more glares than having operation with both eyes. This complication will get better by the time as the wound is healing. At six month, about one percent of those who experience this complication may still have glare. This complication may become a permanent situation. Glare might cause problem in nighttime driving. However a night driving lens, will help in reducing glare.
4. The fluctuation of vision
May occur in a very first week after LASIK surgery, especially at night. The symptoms will improve over time as the eye tissue heals.
5. Problems associate with corneal flap opening
Corneal flap creation is very important part of the LASIK procedure and required the experienced, fully skilled doctor in this field. Even with our high level of experience, and the best microkeratome selected, we still do come up with a chance of incomplete flap opening. For example, the flap is too thin or not smooth after opening. In this case, we will close the flap and let the flap healed up for 2 to 3 months. Then the operation can be processed again as ordinary after the flap is completely healed. Another example, there are some out dated reports about extremely too thick of the flap opening that can destroy the internal structure. To eliminate that problem, LASER VISION uses the microkeratome from Cariazzo Barraquare (Moria), M2, and MK 2000. With the most advance technology, this problem has been eliminated completely.
6. Haze
Haze can occur due to the body reaction to the operation. In LASIK operation, the chance for haze is less than 0.5 percent. Haze problem can not be corrected by glasses or contact lens, however the chances that haze will occur is quite small for LASIK but for PRK the chance of haze vary due to the degree of correction. Fortunately this haze can be decreased by the time. If you want to know the exact risk of the haze for PRK, our doctor will be happy to answer your question.
7. Sharpness of Focus
After LASIK procedure, most of the patient will have much better vision with a little foggy. This adjustment will restore within a few weeks or a few months. The sharpness or focus should be stable within three months. There is less than one- percent chances that the sharpness or focus problem will remain. The glasses or contact lens should help correct the problem. However, there is little chance that contact lens or glasses may not help in this case.
8. Epithelium Ingrowth
The epithelial cell is the most superficial cell of the cornea. Sometime in the procedure this cell can be lodged under the corneal flap. This problem can be corrected by irrigating those epithelium cells out of the interface.
Question : Will LASIK have permanent results ?
LASIK surgery will produce permanent results.
Question : Can LASIK permanently damage my eyes or cause blindness?
Like you, safety is our number one concern as well. Years of research and practice have proven that the Excimeer laser is the safest and most effective method for eye surgery. There has never been any case of blindness or eye damage as a result of using the LASIK surgical process.
Question : If refraction cannot be corrected in one day, can
enhancements
be made?
Any patient who cannot receive total correction at one time can have additional surgery within 3 months after LASIK. If the corrections are done too early, there will may be some accuracy problems. While waiting for the stability of the refraction, the refraction can be corrected by glasses or contact lens.
Question : After LASIK, can we see immediately? Actually, the eye will be shielded with a protective cover for 1 night in order to prevent the patient from rubbing his/her eyes. You can open your eyes and see through the small holes of the eye shield, but your vision will not be 100% clear. Your vision will improve after the first day post LASIK. The progress of which will be checked during your post-LASIK check-up appointment. |
